Curly Girl Update – I Quit

Here’s the update – I’m not doing the Curly Girl Method anymore for 3 reasons: 1) my family members don’t really care for curly hair on me, 2) I’m tired of my hair looking great in the morning and terrible in the afternoon, and 3) in a fit of frustration, I chopped my hair off to chin length – it had grown a few inches and was getting harder to manage.  I know I could do chin length curly hair, but I’m afraid I’d end up looking like this:

So for now, I’m going with a straight sleek look:

And since I chopped my hair off myself, I now have an appointment for next Saturday so my stylist can fix the damage I did. It’s not horrible, but there are some areas that need her magic touch. On a completely unrelated note, did you know that it’s super hard to cut the back of your hair yourself???? 🙂

I’m glad I did this curly experiment because I learned some good lessons from it – my hair loves to be deep conditioned once a month, my hair is so much healthier using sulfate-free shampoo, and using as little heat as possible has made my hair much stronger and thicker than before. Also I think taking a B Complex vitamin has helped my hair as well (which really has nothing to do with CGM, but I thought it was interesting to note).

I thought my fine, thin, dry, brittle hair was out of my control and I would just have to live with it forever, but just changing my shampoo and adding some deep conditioning has shown me that little changes can have a big impact.

I love it when an experiment yields unexpected results!

In case you are interested, here are the products I’m using right now that have helped my hair get healthier (all of these are sulfate and paraben free, I believe) :

Love Beauty and Planet Shampoo. I use the White Coconut and Jasmine scent because I am all about jasmine right now – it smells so good!! And btw, you can get this at Target for around $8.

Suave Coconut Conditioner. Believe it or not, this is a really good lightweight conditioner, and it’s super cheap at Walmart or Target.

Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in detangler. This is a lightweight leave-in, but I still only use a tiny amount of this for when my  hair is feeling dry-ish. My fine thin hair just can’t handle a lot of conditioner. I think I paid $12 for this at Walmart, so this is a good price from Amazon.

Shea Moisture Hydrate + Repair Protein Power Treatment. Did you know that your hair needs protein too? For curly girls, sometimes if your curls are just limp and lifeless, a shot of protein can make them springy again. I used this when I needed a little help with my curls and I’ll probably still use it when I need a little bounce in my hair.

Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque. This is my deep conditioner – I used this at first once a week, then only once a month once my hair started getting healthier.

I think this will wrap up my curly hair experiment for now. I realize that 3 months is probably not really long enough for my hair to transition from straight-ish to wavy/curly, and I might try again early next year, but for now I’m happy with this easy, straight style.

It’s not you, it’s me

Really, honestly my lack of communication this week has nothing to do with you all. I love you all. In fact, I’ve been stalking some of you and you didn’t even know it because I haven’t commented, but really I still puffy heart each and every one of you. It’s me, and work that’s been keeping me away. Work has been crazy-busy but since it’s Friday I figure I’ve earned a little blog time!

So, to recap the last week or so: Thanksgiving was a success! Everything got done with time to spare, the food was great, Shawn and the kids pitched in big time to help get everything ready and it was really just a great weekend all around. Until Sunday when I finally got out and got some Christmas shopping done, which sucked the Christmas joy right out of me. Can I be honest here? Yes I can because it’s my blog, so I’m just gonna lay it out – I hate Christmas shopping. I love giving presents, but I hate the shopping. I hate spending $25 bucks on a cheap plastic toy that will be at the bottom of the toy box next month. I hate it that things are so overpriced and not worth the money you pay for them. I hate it when I don’t know what to get. *sigh* Shawn tells me to not worry about it and just spend the money. I just want to get a good value for my money – is that too much to ask?

I did manage to get all my decorating finished and the tree decorated, so that’s good. I really do love Christmas time and I am really excited that we are going to my sister’s house the day after Christmas to have Christmas with all of my family – that will be a blast! Then the weekend of New Year’s we are going to Memphis to visit some of Shawn’s extended family. We haven’t been back to Memphis for several years, so I think it will be a fun trip for the kiddos. Not sure if we’ll do Graceland again – been there, done that already, so it’s not such a big thrill anymore.

Oh hey guess what?! I get to go to therapy today! FOR MY FINGER, not for my head, thankyouverymuch, although I could probably use some of that as well. It still hurts when I type so maybe they’ll be able to help me with that. I hope so, because it’s hard to type with a finger tip protector on! It should be interesting.

Oh – I got my hair cut and I love it! I went back to my regular girl and told her exactly what I wanted and she cut it exactly the way I wanted it!! I dig my hair now.

Please to enjoy my luscious curls

Oh remember the girlstache debaucle?  Well I did it again.  This time I thought I would try waxing instead, thinking that lots of people do it, so how bad could it be?  HOLY CRAP ON A CRACKER!! THAT SHIZZ HURTS!!!! And now I’m left with a bunch of lovely bumps all over my upper lip and chin. I’m irresistable ya’ll.  Smo-kin. Anyone ever tried those Smooth Away thingies? That’s probably next on my list.

Before I go I want to wish one of my best blogging buddies a very happy birthday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEBBY!!!  I hope you have a wonderful day!!

Later taters – me and my hot hair and bumpy chin have some work to do, so you all have a good weekend!!

Cause I’m all about the hair

Say hello to Bob…

I went with short, wavy, bangs because I was ready for something different.  I’m not sure I love it, but it’s okay for now.

Now that I have the hair issue out of the way, I’m moving on to makeup.  I am on the search for a shade of lipstick that isn’t too dark, and isn’t too pink.  I am the world’s worst at choosing the right shade.  Any suggestions?  And while I”m at it, tell me what you think:  eyeliner or no eyeliner?  I’m not wearing any in this pic, but in my curly long hair pic I am.  Can you tell the difference?  I’ve been wearing makeup for nearly 25 years now and you would think I would know exactly what works for me and what doesn’t, but honestly, I have no clue.  Guess I need to make a trip to Tulsa and visit a makeup counter, there’s nothing close by here, except for Merle Norman, which may have to be an option.

Okay, well it’s 5pm and my new hair and I have to make dinner, do laundry, work out, straighten the house and collapse into bed, all in the next 5 hours, so we’d better get to it!   Have a good night everyone.

I thought this was going to be a great post, until I couldn’t remember what it was that I wanted to blog about.

My coffee and I are at odds with each other this morning. First, it spilled all over my leg as I was getting out of my car this morning. Then when I opened my thermos to pour more coffee, it spilled again all over my desk. Then as I as filling up my coffee cup, it spilled again when I put my creamer in. What is going on?!?! Coffee is the one good thing I can count on in my day and now it’s turning against me!!! Why, Coffee, why?!?I also have a cold, which doesn’t make me a very happy camper. My throat is scratchy and my eyes are itchy and I’m sneezing and snarfling every few minutes. I hate being sick. Being sick sucks.

But as bad as my day has started out, I’m not in a bad mood and I think it can all be attributed to my awesome work out last night. It was 70* and sunny yesterday so I gathered up the kids, went to the park, and did some great interval training. Sounds very pre-planned and impressive, no? Honestly, I didn’t know I was doing an interval workout until I read MizFit’s post this morning, so don’t be impressed. I jogged/walked for 25 minutes and really enjoyed the walking part. Then I went home and after dinner I put in another 30 minutes on the elliptical, which included more interval training (which I didn’t realize was interval training at the time, either). So 55 total minutes of working out yesterday and today I feel good despite the runny nose! Yea me!

I went to the park with every intention of running, but I discovered something. I HATE RUNNING! There. I said it. I am not a runner! Running hurts, it’s hard, and I do not enjoy it!! Sorry Laura – I tried to be cool like you, but alas, it is not to be. I finally came to terms with what I really am: (no, not a wuss, although a case for that could be made) I am a WALKER. Yes, a walker. I can walk faster than I can run and I get a good workout when I walk. Hell, I lost 30 pounds by walking so why would I want to mess with that winning formula? I admit, I get bored just walking, hence the elliptical, but it’s easy, I sweat a lot when I do it, and I can fit it in anytime, so walking it is. I am going to keep adding a little jogging in with it like I did at the park yesterday, so for now I Am Walker, Texas Ranger Hear Me Roar. Honestly, it feels kinda liberating to accept what I am and let go of what I think I should be.

Um, let’s see what else is going on? There were so many things I wanted to blog about and now I can’t think of any of them. Oh, hair update! I have made the appointment with my stylist for next Tuesday – what will the result be? You’ll just have to wait a week to find out! (This blog seems to be all about the hair these days, maybe I should change the name to The Sassy Hair?) I have an idea now of what I want and even found a pic for T to reference when she cuts it. I love getting new hair!

Well I can’t think of anything else right now. If I think of something else, I’ll post it later. Have a great day!

For those of you who are curious…

This is me a la curly hair.  I got up early and washed and blow-dried (blew dry?) just for you!  I actually wear it this way about half the time and I prefer to wear it this way, but some days I just like a change, hence the straightening of yesterday.  But this is what I look like most of the time:

this was very early this morning - I think my eyes are still puffy from sleep!

And just for fun, one without the glasses:

Yesterday’s poll results were split right down middle – half of you thought I should cut my hair short, and the other half thought I should keep it long but get bangs.  But I wonder if seeing me with my hair in all it’s natural frizzy glory would change the results, so here comes Pear Hair Poll 2.0

Okay, enough hair talk!

Here’s a health related tip just so I can keep this blog honest:  sweet potato fries are really good.  Eating a pound of sweet potato fries BY YOURSELF is not so good.  These could be my new crack – this is one food that I can literally eat until I’m sick.  But hey, at least they were baked and not fried!  Oh and also, eating too many sweet potato fries is not conducive to working out – not a great health conscious night at the old homestead, but oh well. I’m over it.  Today’s a new day with new foods to gorge on! See, a positive attitude is a must around here.  🙂

Have a great weekend!

The Pear Hair Poll

Hey!

Today’s post is all about my hair – no talk of calories, workouts, or anything remotely related to health and/or fitness, unless you want to talk about how to strenghten my fine, limp hair.  I’ve been jonesin’ for a new ‘do and I can’t decide which way I should go, so I thought I’d let you all chime in and give me your opinion.  But first, here’s what we are dealing with:

kinda blah if you ask me
kinda blah if you ask me

Here’s another view:

Don’t you love how I pose for pics? If one of my coworkers walked in, I’d be mortified.

Anyway, this is how I looked with short hair about a year ago:

2008-0932

You can’t really tell in these pictures, but my hair is naturally very wavy. I straightened it in all of these pictures, but when I just blow it dry, it is quite curly, so keep that in mind when you are participating in the poll. 🙂

Okay, here it is.  The fate of my hair lies in your hands.  Choose well!

And if you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.  I’m open to any good ideas!

TIA  for humoring me with this, you guys are awesome!

Question of the week – this is very important!

loldogs, cute puppy pictures, my hair, I Has a Hotdog

I don’t have much to talk about today because a) I haven’t done anything embarrassing lately and 2) I have a headache that is making it hard to think too much.  So I will ask the most pressing question lingering in brain today:

What do you do for dry hair?

I told you I’m not thinking too hard today.

Seriously, my hair is really dry and usually a trip to the salon and my uber-talented stylist would fix me right up, but since I can’t get an appointment for another 2 weeks (Hello Holiday time), I need to come up with an at-home solution.  My hair is shoulder length and very fine, but very dry for some odd reason (it could be the Suave shampoo I’ve been using since my daughter stole my Bath & Body Works shampoo – little thief. But her hair looks great.).  I’m looking for something inexpensive, but pampering at the same time.  Any ideas, oh great readers???
