Wednesday Wins

Hello hello!

I didn’t do a Mental Health Monday post because Monday was kind of a busy day and plus I just couldn’t think of a good topic. So I skipped it, which relieved my mental stress about it, so I guess these two sentences are my Mental Health Monday post. You’re welcome.

However, I DO have some wins for today’s post! Let’s get to it:

  • I changed my Harvest Bag delivery from every-other-week to every week because I am enjoying it so much already. And they give so much produce that I am able to share it with others, which I really enjoy being able to do.
  • I am hitting my 10,000 steps regularly. Being in this Fitbit challenge with my friend is super motivating and has made me aware of just how little I was moving throughout the day previously. It’s a good thing I am in an office alone because most days you will find me walking laps in my office or busting out a few Zumba moves at my copier. The most surprising thing is this: I thought it would take a Herculean effort to get 10k steps in a day…but actually it only takes a small but conscious effort to get that many steps. And a Zumba class doesn’t hurt either.

  • I found my book club book at the library. I’m trying to be more mindful of how I spend my money and so when we decided on our next book, I checked on our library’s website and sure enough, there was one copy available. I got that book, plus a couple of others to tide me over until our next meeting. In a world of Amazon Prime shipping, I often forget how much I enjoy going to the library where I can spend time getting lost in all the available options and oh, also, get books FOR FREE. As much as having a full book case at home thrills me, what thrills me even more is not spending money on things I can get for free.
  • My tax refund landed in my bank account today! And here’s where I have to reign in my Emotion Mind who says SPEND ALL THE MONIES!!!! My husband and I are going to discuss how we want to use this money, and I am going to fully fund some of my budget categories, and yes we’ll use some of it to treat ourselves to something small we’ve been talking about getting for awhile. We just need to figure out which thing we want, out of a list of a dozen things. But man, having a fat bank account (at least for a little while) brings such peace of mind.

Howdy!

Still feeling a bit tired today, but better than I have felt the last 4 days. I had gotten out of the habit of taking my iron supplement over the last two months, so I started that again a few days ago. I know it takes a couple of weeks for the iron to start doing its thing, but hopefully I’ll start having more energy soon. I don’t really think that has anything to do with why I was so tired over the weekend, but it can’t hurt to put that habit into practice again.

I found my Fitbit!! Just as I suspected, it was in the couch. I think I remember taking it off the charger, then lying down on the couch for a nap and that must have been when it fell in between the cushions. Reunited, and it feels so good. I also read about a hack for the Fitbit sleep wristband thingie (technical term) for the Fitbit One (which is what I have). My sleep wristband got messed up sometime a couple of years ago – I think it got torn if I remember correctly, so I hadn’t been using the sleep function of the Fitbit, but one day when I was perusing the online forum on Fitbit’s website I read about how you can get a cheap terry cloth wristband (the kind tennis players wear), snip a small hole in the center and wiggle your Fitbit into the wristband. Then you just slip on the wristband and go to sleep. I tried this last night and it worked great! It was comfy, it didn’t move around, and it still recorded my sleeping/restless times throughout the night. I love a good life hack!

On my way home from work every evening, I pass by a liquor store, and as I drove by last night it occurred to me that I would like for my attitude toward sweets to be the same as my attitude toward alcohol: nice to have occasionally, but not something I want, or even think about, every day. I’m not a big drinker. I might have a glass of wine once a month on a weekend, or when we go to a Mexican restaurant my husband and I like to have a margarita…but most days I don’t even want alcohol. I don’t even think about wanting alcohol. Alcohol is something that to me is a fun treat once in a great while. I am curious as to why I can’t think the same way about sweets…I  mean, after all, they’re both sugar, right? (Doesn’t alcohol turn to sugar in the body? Am I right in thinking this?) Anyway, I would really love to cultivate that take-it-or-leave-it attitude that I have toward alcohol and apply it to sweets. I just really have no idea how to get from Point A to Point B with that one. :/

I think one of my goals for this year is to fall in love with vegetables. I like vegetables. They’re nice to look at and they’re so beneficial…but do I ❤ ❤ ❤LOVE  them? Not so much. I do really enjoy roasted vegetables, but roasting them takes a little time and I typically forget to do that when I’m cooking dinner at night. I really like all the vegetable tian recipes I’ve been seeing on blogs and Pinterest lately…so maybe I just need to make up a big batch of that on the weekend and eat off of that for a few days. Maybe that will be a good first step. Maybe falling in love with vegetables is a bridge to lessening my desire for sweets? Hmmm…  Yes, I think my pursuit of veggies will be a good thing to focus on because really, could there be a bad outcome?? Hard to think of one.

Time to wrap this up because unfortunately, I don’t get paid to blog at work and there is actual work-work to be done today.

So I walked a little bit yesterday

Top O’ the Monday morning to ya!  It’s cold, dark, and rainy today plus I have a headache. If this is the top of the day, I don’t wanna see what the bottom looks like.

I had a good weigh in on Saturday. After last week’s gain, I was hyper vigilant about what I ate and tried to be very careful, and other than an unfortunate guacamole incident (if loving guacamole is wrong, I don’t wanna be right. EVER.), I did really well. I had a loss of 2.6 pounds which brings my weight down to 192.2, which means I’ve lost 4.8 since February 2. I’d say I’m trucking along nicely. 🙂

Here’s a tip: if you want to add some steps to your pedometer, go to an outdoor expo event. The BassMaster Classic came to Tulsa over the weekend and for those of you who have no idea what that is, go here. Or here. My husband is a semi-professional wannabe bass fisherman so for him, this was like a trip to Disneyland, but better because there were boats and stuff. We got to the Outdoor Expo at 11:30am and we walked. And walked, and walked, andwalked andwalkeandwalkedandwalked. And then we walked some more. Did I mention that there was a lot of walking? Because we walked the hell out of that place. Then, 3 1/2 hours later, we walked across the street to the BOK Center (big  place that has concerts, etc) to watch the final weigh-in where the fishermen drive their boats into the center and weigh their fish onstage and the angler with the highest weight wins $500,000. That’s half a mil, folks. This ain’t no rinky dink redneck thing, this is like the Oscars of bass fishing. Anyway, our seats were on the third level of the place, so not only did we walk a lot on level surfaces, we walked up and down 3 flights of stairs multiple times. After the event was over, we walked back to the shuttle, and after a quick stop at Steak ‘n Shake, we finally arrived home at 9:15pm. I checked my Fitbit and I racked up over 11,000 steps yesterday! On days that I don’t walk on the treadmill in the mornings, I average about 3,000 steps, and on days that I do get on the treadmill, I might squeak out 8,000 steps, so 11,000 steps is a big deal for me!! I was happy to find that 11,000 steps also equal 5 WW activity points, which will help offset the popcorn and the Pepsi and the peanut m&ms I had yesterday. There just isn’t a lot of healthy food choices at those kind of events and I didn’t adequately prepare for it at all. I meant to bring some snacks with me, but forgot to grab them before we left, hence the choice of concession foods. Once we got to Steak ‘n Shake at 8:00 that night, all I wanted was a vegetable, any vegetable, so I was happy to see a pecan chicken salad on their menu. The salad was…meh, but it was better than a burger and fries and I felt a lot better after I had eaten it.

Here’s a question: when faced with concession foods, what’s the least damaging option? I think the choices were hot dogs, soft pretzel, nachos, popcorn, candy bars (king size, not regular)…I think that was it. I got the popcorn and a bottle of water (and then also stole some of my husband’s peanut M&Ms because hello, peanut M&Ms), but I don’t know if that was my best bet or not.

Yesterday was a lot of fun and it was great to see my normally reserved husband acting like a kid in a candy store, even though all fishing lures look the same to me. Oh the things we do for the ones we love! 🙂

Rested and restored

Hello kids!!

I hope you all had a nice Christmas holiday. I fully intended to blog before Christmas but I was busybusy and didn’t make time to sit down and post. But now that the stockings have been hung and the wrapping paper carnage has been cleaned up (mostly) and I have taken a sufficient number of naps, it feels like a good time to  post.

So just to wrap up the workplace drama, I talked with Janet about it and she brought up some good points – things I perhaps could have done differently, things the bigwigs should have done differently, and how it’s not really something to quit my job over, but I’m still keeping an eye open. I go back and see her on the 7th and hopefully we’ll talk about my food issues then.

Speaking of food issues (aren’t we always?) I have done really well in the last couple of weeks – I guess all the stress decreased my appetite for a few days. Sugar had no hold on me; even with all the holiday baking I just had no desire to partake of any of the sugary treats. Until yesterday, that is.  When I finally realized that everything was bought, wrapped, cooked, opened, exchanged and all was well and good, that’s when I succumbed to The Afters. Today has been especially hard – being supremely lazy and taking all sorts of catnaps has made me feel rested, but I’m still dealing with wanting to eat – and it’s not just sugar that I want (in fact, that’s not even what I really want) I want fun appetizer-type foods. Luckily I don’t have anything of the sort in my house and I don’t want it bad enough to go and get it. I just want FOOD. Good, tasty, warm and filling food. We’ve got grilled chicken on the menu tonight (if the hubs wants to stand outside in 16 degree weather and grill it) and I’ve got some broccoli that I want to roast, so I’m looking forward to that. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

In other news, I got a Kindle Fire from Santa and I luuuurrrve it!!! Since I have joined the Land of the Apps, my question for you is, what are some of your favorite apps? Other than email, Facebook, Pinterest…what apps have you come to love? I got the PBS app, and being the semi-nerd that I am, I’m especially excited that I can watch a show about the snowy owl anytime I want.  I’ve also downloaded the FitBit app because, Merry Christmas to me, I ordered a Fitbit One and I  can’t wait to get it and play with it. IF IT EVER GETS HERE. I mean, I ordered the thing 6 days ago and yes, I realize we had a major holiday and a weekend in those 6 days, but WHAT ABOUT MY NEEDS, Fitbit??? Hmmm?  If you cared about me, Fitbit, you would have shipped that sucker out the minute I ordered it. It’s like you don’t even know me! Oh wait, you don’t know me…never mind, just get it here soon pleeeeeeeze!!!

Okay, well even though I’m on vacation this week, laundry and dishes don’t take vacations so I suppose I should deal with those pesky details. If Santa really loved me, he’d get me a maid…or a wife. 😉
