Talking and coffee and words

I had to come to work an hour early this morning because my boss was going to be gone for an appointment and I had to open the door for the internal auditor who is here this week. Normally when I come in at 8:00, my boss and I have an understanding that we don’t speak for at least the first 15 minutes because he is not much of a talker anyway and I am not a morning person. He understands that he should not approach me until I’ve had at least one cup of coffee. We have an agreement. It works.

Well. Apparently Internal Auditor did not get that memo because OMG SO MUCH TALKING. People who initiate conversations at 6:45 a.m. obviously don’t know how to read a room. Dude, I do not care about the weather in Florida. I do not care that your 5’3″ girlfriend gained 8 pounds – apparently she went from 104 pounds to 112 pounds – and you can really see every pound on her (I gave him an earful on how at 112 pounds, she is still on the low end of the BMI scale for her height), and I don’t care that you are supposed to be on a no-carb diet but those donuts at the convenience store were calling your name. If you want me to pretend to care, then at least give me 15 minutes to get some caffeine in my system. I’ve already spoken more words in the last hour and a half than I usually speak all day. Having conversations is hard so early in the morning. I’m exhausted.

In other more caffeinated news, I’ve taken up an obscure little hobby that I’m certain no one knows about yet*: hand-lettering. I started playing around with it on Labor Day weekend and since then I’ve been practicing nearly every day. I really enjoy it because the movements are slow and methodical, and it can become almost meditative in a sense. However, the more I look for resources on the internet (practice sheets, styles, courses, etc.) the more overwhelmed I get because, good gravy, is there anyone NOT doing this? There are so many Instagram accounts and Facebook pages and websites devoted to this that it is very easy to go down the rabbit hole and never resurface again. I finally just had to stop looking and just stick to practicing the alphabet. I’ll work my way up to the fancy stuff later. Maybe someday when I feel like my writing isn’t shaky, and I can figure out spacing, and my lettering doesn’t look it was done by a 3 year old, I’ll post some of it here on my blog. Any of my readers out there have any experience with hand-lettering? Any tips or advice you care to offer a novice?

I think that’s enough words for today – spoken and written. I’m tired.

*sarcasm. I honestly had no idea that this hand-lettering thing was such a…THING now. It’s crazy how many websites there are devoted to this stuff.

I thought this was going to be a great post, until I couldn’t remember what it was that I wanted to blog about. — April 15, 2009

I thought this was going to be a great post, until I couldn’t remember what it was that I wanted to blog about.

My coffee and I are at odds with each other this morning. First, it spilled all over my leg as I was getting out of my car this morning. Then when I opened my thermos to pour more coffee, it spilled again all over my desk. Then as I as filling up my coffee cup, it spilled again when I put my creamer in. What is going on?!?! Coffee is the one good thing I can count on in my day and now it’s turning against me!!! Why, Coffee, why?!?I also have a cold, which doesn’t make me a very happy camper. My throat is scratchy and my eyes are itchy and I’m sneezing and snarfling every few minutes. I hate being sick. Being sick sucks.

But as bad as my day has started out, I’m not in a bad mood and I think it can all be attributed to my awesome work out last night. It was 70* and sunny yesterday so I gathered up the kids, went to the park, and did some great interval training. Sounds very pre-planned and impressive, no? Honestly, I didn’t know I was doing an interval workout until I read MizFit’s post this morning, so don’t be impressed. I jogged/walked for 25 minutes and really enjoyed the walking part. Then I went home and after dinner I put in another 30 minutes on the elliptical, which included more interval training (which I didn’t realize was interval training at the time, either). So 55 total minutes of working out yesterday and today I feel good despite the runny nose! Yea me!

I went to the park with every intention of running, but I discovered something. I HATE RUNNING! There. I said it. I am not a runner! Running hurts, it’s hard, and I do not enjoy it!! Sorry Laura – I tried to be cool like you, but alas, it is not to be. I finally came to terms with what I really am: (no, not a wuss, although a case for that could be made) I am a WALKER. Yes, a walker. I can walk faster than I can run and I get a good workout when I walk. Hell, I lost 30 pounds by walking so why would I want to mess with that winning formula? I admit, I get bored just walking, hence the elliptical, but it’s easy, I sweat a lot when I do it, and I can fit it in anytime, so walking it is. I am going to keep adding a little jogging in with it like I did at the park yesterday, so for now I Am Walker, Texas Ranger Hear Me Roar. Honestly, it feels kinda liberating to accept what I am and let go of what I think I should be.

Um, let’s see what else is going on? There were so many things I wanted to blog about and now I can’t think of any of them. Oh, hair update! I have made the appointment with my stylist for next Tuesday – what will the result be? You’ll just have to wait a week to find out! (This blog seems to be all about the hair these days, maybe I should change the name to The Sassy Hair?) I have an idea now of what I want and even found a pic for T to reference when she cuts it. I love getting new hair!

Well I can’t think of anything else right now. If I think of something else, I’ll post it later. Have a great day!

Coffee, anyone? — January 24, 2008

Coffee, anyone?

Thanks to Tigerlilly for posting about the ShareSenseo program, I entered and won a Senseo coffee machine. It came yesterday and it is sooo cool. You can brew 2 small cups of coffee at one time, or one big mug of coffee. I loves me some kitchen gadgets and this one is the best!! I’m seriously thinking of bringing it to work with me and putting it in my office. The coffee that the guys drink here is well, um, just downright NASTY! I usually fill my big OSU mug and bring coffee from home, but it always gets cold fast and there is no love in a cold cuppa coffee. I would post a picture of it, but I’m such a dork that I don’t know how to post pictures on my blog, so I’ll just link to it. Did I mention that the process is really fast? I entered the contest on the 14th and got the machine on the 23, just over a week. How’s that for service??? Tres magnifique, no?

In other news, I have been watching my boss on his WeightWatchers quest and just as I suspected, he’s doing really great. He has lost 15 pounds in two weeks (dontcha hate guys for their uncanny ability to drop weight like a lead balloon?), and I catch myself thinking, “I wanna do that too!” But as I was lamenting my own lack of loss, I started thinking that I don’t have to BE on WW to eat the foods I was eating on while I was doing WW – I can eat that stuff anyway!! Foods that I genuinely liked and felt good eating like string cheese, yogurt, frozen fruit, different varieties of frozen vegetables, whole wheat crackers, Laughing Cow cheese and hummus, I can eat those anytime! So I went to my local WalMarts (the *s* added for all you hillbilly folk out there) and I loaded up on all the aforementioned foods plus a few additional items. It’s really hard to eat healthy when all you have in the kitchen is store brand cookies and macaroni and cheese, which is what my husband buys when he goes shopping, which is why I don’t let him do the grocery shopping very often. So I’m feeling better today food-wise and I’m betting I make better choices about what I put in my mouth.

In relation to food, I usually don’t buy things I love if no one else in the house likes them, because apparently I believe that I am unable to control myself when alone with a favorite food. That’s hogwash, I say!! In my quest to pamper myself a little more, I bought myself some guacamole last night. What’s the big deal about guacamole you ask? Well let me tell you…according to every member of my little family, guacamole looks like a “big green turd” (yes, that’s in quotes for a reason) and no one will even try it. So I never would buy it because no one else would eat it. Last night, that’s SPECIFICALLY the reason I bought it! Lots of guac all to myself!!! Mmmmm, Guacamole, with your avacodo-y goodness, I love you!! With chips and a margarita, what else does one need in the world? Well, I didn’t have the margarita (bummer), but I had an ample amount of chips and guac and I was giddy with pleasure. I could get used to this being-good-to-myself thing!!
