Finding my way through my forties

Ya learn something new every day

Guess what I learned today?  I learned that Dietitian is spelled with a “t”, not a “c”.  Go ahead, look at it again.  I’ll be willing to bet money that 99% of people spell it with a “c”. They would be wrong, and I would be rich.

Speaking of dietiTians, (see what I did there, that’s some fancy segueing, huh?!) my new friend Diana has a new blog. She is a registered dietiTian who specializes in helping people with diabetes and her thing is menu planning, which is why her friends gave her the moniker of The Menu Coach.  Since I’m rather evangelical about getting people into blogging, I said I’d give her some help – she wants to know what people would like to see on her blog, so I’m pulling out the handy-dandy PearPoll, and if you would be so gracious as to vote, you’d be helping out a fellow blogger.  If you or someone you know has diabetes (I think most of us know at least ONE person who does), you might point them to her site to see what they think as well.  She is chock full of information on all things diabetic, so there should be something of interest to them on her site.  Without futher ado, I bring you today’s Pear Poll:

Thank you so so so much for your help!  Here is her current website: If you have time, go by there and give her a warm bloggy welcome!

PS – There is a big ice/snow storm headed my way, so if you don’t hear from me in the next few days I am:

a) working furiously trying to finish my kitchen

b) loaded up on the couch with the fam watching movies and eating popcorn

c) shivering my arse off because the power went out.

or d) just too lazy to blog.

Have a good weekend!  🙂

The Food Spectrum/Reunion Poll — June 23, 2009

The Food Spectrum/Reunion Poll

Hey y’all. Is it just me or has this summer been super busy for everyone? Seems like there’s something going on everyday. Whatever happened to the lazy crazy hazy dayz of summer?

Weight loss is going well – I’ve lost 6 pounds so far. I’ve been moving more and eating less and whaddya know? It works. One thing I’m having trouble with is where I want to comfortably fall on the food spectrum. On one end we’ve got all-junk-all-the-time and waaaayyyyy over on the other end is the hardcore raw vegan way of life. I think I’d like to fall somewhere in the middle of that broad spectrum, but what does that look like? Food from a box just does not appeal to me anymore, but I’m not much of a cook, so a lot of the time I find myself standing in front of the fridge trying to figure out how to make a meal without the box – and I’m clueless. Ideally, I’d like to get away from processed foods, but realistically, I don’t know how to make that happen without causing some kind of uprising from the rest of the family. So what does the middle of the road, healthy, family-friendy, busy-mom inspiring way of eating look like? Have any of you reached that place? If so, would you mind sharing what a typical week of meals looks like, or point me to a website where I might be enlightened? I guess what I’m really looking for here is a mentor who can teach me how to feed my family healthy meals without breaking my budget. Anyone want to volunteer? 🙂

Something else I need help with is THE REUNION. I am so firmly planted right in the middle of the fence on this. I can not decide one way or another if I should go. My BFF isn’t going, but there a few people I’d like to see and catch up with – no one I’m particularly close to, just curious about. Then there is the expense to consider – hotel, reunion fees, new clothes (of course) and a mani/pedi (of course). I’d have to find an arrangement for the kiddos, but that wouldn’t be hard. I haven’t been back to my hometown in YEARS, so it would be nice to hit the old stomping grounds again. On the other hand, if I didn’t go, that money could be used for a family vacation, and heaven knows I need a vacation. Also if I didn’t go that would subtract a lot of stress and worry from my already harried life, and most everyone is on FaceBook these days, so it’s really easy to keep in touch with people. We went to Shawn’s reunion a couple of years ago, so I feel like it’s my turn, and it would be an opportunity for us to get out and just be a couple for a couple of days….okay so you can see why I’m having a hard time deciding! I’m going to leave it up to the Mighty Pear Poll to help me decide. Reunion fees are due by the end of this week so I have until then to decide.

For those of you who are curious… — April 10, 2009

For those of you who are curious…

This is me a la curly hair.  I got up early and washed and blow-dried (blew dry?) just for you!  I actually wear it this way about half the time and I prefer to wear it this way, but some days I just like a change, hence the straightening of yesterday.  But this is what I look like most of the time:

this was very early this morning - I think my eyes are still puffy from sleep!

And just for fun, one without the glasses:

look Ma! No glasses!

Yesterday’s poll results were split right down middle – half of you thought I should cut my hair short, and the other half thought I should keep it long but get bangs.  But I wonder if seeing me with my hair in all it’s natural frizzy glory would change the results, so here comes Pear Hair Poll 2.0

Okay, enough hair talk!

Here’s a health related tip just so I can keep this blog honest:  sweet potato fries are really good.  Eating a pound of sweet potato fries BY YOURSELF is not so good.  These could be my new crack – this is one food that I can literally eat until I’m sick.  But hey, at least they were baked and not fried!  Oh and also, eating too many sweet potato fries is not conducive to working out – not a great health conscious night at the old homestead, but oh well. I’m over it.  Today’s a new day with new foods to gorge on! See, a positive attitude is a must around here.  🙂

Have a great weekend!

The Pear Hair Poll — April 9, 2009

The Pear Hair Poll

Today’s post is all about my hair – no talk of calories, workouts, or anything remotely related to health and/or fitness, unless you want to talk about how to strenghten my fine, limp hair.  I’ve been jonesin’ for a new ‘do and I can’t decide which way I should go, so I thought I’d let you all chime in and give me your opinion.  But first, here’s what we are dealing with:

kinda blah if you ask me
kinda blah if you ask me

Here’s another view:

Don’t you love how I pose for pics? If one of my coworkers walked in, I’d be mortified.

Anyway, this is how I looked with short hair about a year ago:

You can’t really tell in these pictures, but my hair is naturally very wavy. I straightened it in all of these pictures, but when I just blow it dry, it is quite curly, so keep that in mind when you are participating in the poll. 🙂

Okay, here it is.  The fate of my hair lies in your hands.  Choose well!

And if you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.  I’m open to any good ideas!

TIA  for humoring me with this, you guys are awesome!
