Another Quick Question

You had some really thoughtful things to say about Self Care (I’m capitalizing it because I feel it deserves it) in my last post! Thanks to all of you who chimed in and if you haven’t yet, feel free to do so any time.

I have another quick question for you all, and this is a thought that has been rolling around in my head for a few days so I thought I would once again see what your thoughts are about it. Here’s the question(s):

Do you feel that you have a responsibility (to yourself, your family, your community) to exercise regularly? Further, is a person being irresponsible if they don’t exercise and move in ways that will keep them healthy and at their best?

Keep in mind, I’m talking about people who don’t have legitimate physical limitations that would prevent them from exercising. I’m talking about average folks here.

  1. Oh, wow. The world would sure be a better place wouldn’t it (if people exercised regularly). I’m not talking so much about having a fit body but more about the way regular physical exercise makes us feel: relaxed, energized, capable/confident.

    But do we owe it to ourselves and others to do so? People have the “right” to not exercise, but ethically, I do owe it to myself and my family to take care of myself. I don’t think we owe the community our commitment to exercise. I know there is the idea of the added health care industry burdens put on by preventable conditions, but then we’d have to put the spotlight on different habits like smoking, alcohol, drug abuse, …and tanning. I’m afraid of community members judging each other even more. (These are just my initial ponderings).

  2. Hmm. You know, I kind of do feel like people have a responsibility to work at being healthy. Even if it’s just a 20 minute walk. I think you owe it not only to yourself, but to your family and people who care about you to try to keep yourself healthy. I also think there is a financial component here. Whether we’re paying through private insurance, or if you’re in a country lucky enough to have universal healthcare, you are costing people more on their insurance or taxes when you don’t take care of yourself unless you are paying 100% out of your pocket (and then there is still a resource issue.)

    Society affects itself. We affect society. I think it needs to be done in a non-nasty non-judgemental way though. Is there a perfect weight or perfect anything? No, and I don’t think that should be the agenda. Will people still get sick? Yes. Will they still be over weight and have complications and other issues? Yes. But should we take steps to do better for everyone? Yes, i think so. This isn’t just limited to exercise, but to smoking, and more. I think “owe” sounds nasty. I know it makes my skin itch and want to slap someone and scream “I DON’T OWE YOU ANYTHING!!!” Rawr. But, pulling back from that, trying to look at it as a caring, resource conscious, respectful of ourselves and others society… yes.

  3. Good question! I think we have a responsibility to be at least try to live a healthy lifestyle. Exercise is part of that, but doesn’t necessarily have to mean going to a gym or doing what most people think of as exercise. It could mean choosing to walk or bike instead of driving, taking the stairs, playing with their kids outside, and other active things.

  4. I lost almost 60lbs, improved all my blood panels (including having a glucose number in the pre-diabetic range, go down to the 80s), and I did NO exercise at all during that time. None, zip, nada 🙂

    Now I’m two years into maintenance, and I still don’t factor exercise into my maintenance plan. I have picked up body-weight strength training, (right now twice a week/20ish minutes a time), because it does magical things for swimsuit season lol. And I walk a few miles a week during the summer, because it gives me some ‘me’ time, without three kids hanging off of me 🙂

    But, I could stop both things tomorrow and still successfully maintain (did this over the past fall and winter months-no exercise at all from September-March).

    I have a responsibility to myself to keep my weight in check, because for me it directly affects my glucose number. I do that by keeping within my calorie goals and watching how much food I eat. No exercise needed and my blood work proves this 🙂

  5. I am a personal trainer who specializes in working with people who are morbidly obese, and I work with an integrative wellness program for people with mild to severe mental health issues. Yes, people have a responsibility for their health and wellness to be active each and every day. Once we get people who have severe depression, or diagnosed bi-polar, have anxiety disorders or even schizophrenia…their symptoms lessen when they are exercising consistently. It will make you feel better mentally and physically.

    I am struggling with my own motivation and been battling a mystery illness for 6 months which has made me gain weight. Lots of negative self talk etc. I am back into a routine (can you count 2 days a routine?), and feeling better (though the heavy dose of antibiotics I am on for the next 3 weeks seems to be helping too.) I am nicer to my husband and kid when I am exercising. I am a better example for my clients, and more inspirational to others.
