Jar of Gems

Hey kids! How was your weekend? My hair is being weird today, must be a Monday thing. :/

I’ve decided to stick with my Saturday morning Weight Watchers meetings instead of switching to Thursday evenings for a couple of reasons: a) there are several Lifetime members/members who are at goal/members who are close to goal. In other words, there are a lot of successful folks in this meeting and they are good at giving out advice and support. I like that. Reason b) is that it gets me up and going for the day, otherwise I would lay around until noon and then bemoan the fact that my weekends feel so short. Another reason (c) is that I do my grocery shopping right after my meeting and it’s nice to get it done and out of the way.

Before I share my weigh-in results, I’m going to share with you my new favorite lunch. I’ve been eating this same lunch (with slight variations) for about 3 weeks now and I’m still not tired of it. I call it the Mediterranean Lunch Wrap of Wonder and here’s how it goes: get yourself a flour tortilla or a fancy wrap (whatever you have on hand), then smush a Laughing Cow wedge over it. Next sprinkle some chopped black olives over the LC, then add a BIG handful of spinach on top of that. Get yourself some roasted red peppers from a jar and add a few of those over the spinach, then sprinkle some sunflower kernels on top of that. Add some sliced turkey or chicken, then roll that sucker up as tight as you can. Then take a bite and savor the all mighty goodness. Add a side of baby carrots and you’re good to go!! I love this lunch so much. So, so much. And it holds me for quite a while in the afternoons, which is a bonus. YUM!!

Okay, on to the weigh in…I finally dropped another pound on Saturday. I was starting to doubt my ability to lose weight, but guess what? If you don’t eat a crap-ton, you don’t gain a crap-ton!! Genius, right?! My totals are thus: current weight is now 191.6 which means a total loss of 5.2 pounds since Feb. Slow and steady is the story of my life, but I’ll take it. I’m just glad to be moving downward again.

Another thing that is helping, is that I’ve been using Kyra’s idea of the Marble Jar to help keep me on track throughout the day. The idea is that the marble (or rock or bead or gem) is a physical reminder of the kind of day I want to have. I want to have the kind of day I can feel good about – I want to make good choices with my food and also in other areas of my life (like work and the ever-lovin’ laundry), so having this gem with me all day reminds me to stay on track. At the end of the day, if I feel like I have done a reasonably good job of moving forward with my goals, then I add my gem to the jar. If I’ve had a day that wasn’t awful, but I could have done better, I don’t add that gem to the jar. If I have a day where I just blow it completely, I not only don’t add that day’s gem, I take an extra one out. Luckily I haven’t had to do that yet.  What I love most about it this is I only carry one gem with me at a time. I don’t load my pockets up with 52 weeks’ worth of gems – that would be a heavy load to carry! I only carry one gem per day – I only focus on today’s choices – what can I do TODAY that will move me forward?

Do you know how much easier it is to live when you take tomorrow’s worries out of the equation? So much easier! And that’s the purpose of the Marble Jar – to focus on today’s choices only.

Here is my gem. It lives on my desk where I can see it all day, then it goes home with me and stays in my pocket until it graduates to the jar.

The idea is the same as adding pearls to a string – one good day will eventually add up to a lot of good days which will eventually add up to a smaller waistline and a saner way of eating.

Do any of you do a variation of the Marble Jar? Does anyone have another favorite wrap recipe to share? Is anyone else having a weird hair day (I seem to be having those a lot lately)?

  1. I love the jar idea! I also love your wrap. I might have to try that one. I don’t usually make wraps, but I do love that breakfast wrap I used to make. I might have to get me some wraps this week! And some laughing cow while I’m at it. Because I think its in both wraps!

  2. LOVE your take on the marble jar.

One of my kid’s teacher did that and it worked really well as a visual for a class too.

A classic idea that you have simplified down to a great tool. I love that you have the day’s gem on your desk as a visual reminder of your priorities for the day. I love that you tuck it the jar at the end of the day.

I know another blogger who used stickers on her calendar. Another very basic idea that was a great visual. I think she worked with two stickers. One for food and another for exercise. They were very simple stickers. I think maybe the round kind that are one color each. maybe green for food and red for exercise. So, at a glance, she could look at the calendar page and see how her month was going.

I like simple and I am very visual. so this concept really appeals to me.

    very good post.

Glad you are heading in the right direction and building good habits.

  3. LOVE the “Jar of Gems” idea– I’d never even thought of doing something like that! And such a simple, classic idea. It takes the whole “omigosh, I have so much to do this week/month/year, and how in the world am I going to get it all done AND eat right this week?!?!” freak-out factor that the females in this family tend to battle out of the daily equation, which is what I need to be focusing on anyway– One. Day. At. A. Time. Love it!

Also, Vicki’s idea of the stickers on a calendar is awesome– I used to circle the # of the date on my desk calendar at work (in Sharpie) for each day I worked out. It was SUCH a good visual. I should really start that up again!

And yes, I’ve had like 4 straight months of weird hair days, and I hate it– it must stop soon.

  4. You are on a roll – nice job, Jill! I hear ya on the whole getting up and moving thing – much as I like to laze around in the mornings, I end up feeling like I’ve lost the day if I don’t get started early.

  5. Like the marble idea, and loved the wrap idea. Congrats on the weight loss. I too, lost a pound this week. Glad to be moving in the right direction, but starting from 387 and only losing a pound is going to get me nowhere fast. Hope you have a great hair week. 🙂

    1. Hey, stop that negative talk! Losing one pound a week is fantastic– slow and steady and SAFE and healthy and most importantly, better than the alternative. Just think, at this rate, one year from now you’ll be down over 50 pounds! Keep it up, and good for you!!!

    1. Ditto, Kyra =) Although, she did teach me the wonder of eating cereal from a cup (genius!) when I was like 10, so I guess I’ll call it a wash 😉

      1. Good! I’m glad neither one of you likes black olives because that means there’s more for me!!! YAY BLACK OLIVES!!! Yum!!! (seriously, I love them. In college, I use to order a mini pizza with black olives as the only topping. Oh yes I did.)

  6. Thank you for the wrap recipe — I’ve already written that one down. Sounds delish.

I used to do the beads on a bracelet thing where 10 small beads can be traded in for a larger bead, etc. I stopped because that was just one more thing I had to make time to do. I think the bead in jar idea would be so much easier. I do use tiny happy face stickers on my calendar, though, when I worked out.

  7. I don’t know exactly what variation I will use, but I will do SOMETHING like the gem jar. I love it! What a great idea. Only today. That’s all I can worry about. Only today! Thanks. I’ll try the wrap, too!

  8. I really like your idea of the marble jar. I bought myself a square dry erase board that has bright colors on it, and I have been putting a green check mark for the days that are on track, if it’s a so/so day I put a green check with a red minus next to it, and if the total day was off I put a red check. I also add a blue “C” for days I do cardio workouts and a blue “S” for days I do strength training. That way I can see that there are more good days than so/so or “bad” days, and see my workout progress as well. Gives a good overall picture of the month as well. BUT, I do like the idea of carrying the gem or marble or whatever you are using for your jar all day as a physical reminder to take out and use when you’re on the verge of making a not so good choice.

  9. Reading your posts on a Monday morning (April 29) and loving the positive feeling. I think everyone has goals that are just a bit out of reach, but that’s why we try harder. Healthy living is a great motivator for me, until I see a piece of chocolate 🙂 Thanks for the encouragement and for the jar of gems idea. Definitely going to give it a try!
