You will never believe what I did this week…

Ok, wait… backstory: I took my kids to the movies last Sunday and let me just say that much candy was consumed. By me.

Before that, I had been on a steady diet of cookies, brownies and Frosted Flakes. Things were not going well for me in the healthy food area of my life. I found myself reaching for sugar mindlessly – I didn’t even need a reason, every time I walked through the kitchen I grabbed a cookie (or two), and if you could see the layout of my house you would know that I walk through the kitchen many, many times a day.

So. Sunday: I ate nearly a whole box of Junior Mints, plus half of my daughter’s peanut m&ms, plus half of my other daughter’s Reeses Pieces…it was quite ugly. By the end of the movie, I had a headache and just felt horrible for the rest of the night. I decided then that I wanted needed to go on a sugar fast and I started right that minute.

On Monday morning I told myself “Just make it through one day. Let’s just do this for one day and see how it goes.” And it went pretty well. So I decided to do it again on Tuesday. And Tuesday went pretty well. And so on for Thursday and today.

Folks, I have had no sugar in my coffee (just milk), no cookies, no desserts, no sugary snacks of any kind all week.

THIS IS MIRACULOUS.

I didn’t try to eliminate all sugar because there is sugar in practically everything – I just focused on eliminating sweets and desserts and any extra sugar. (Baby steps, folks –  it’s all about the slow and steady, remember?)

The most amazing part of all this is that it wasn’t that hard once I decided to do it. I didn’t have to white-knuckle my way through it or have a battle of wills or anything of the sort.

Now, I’ve still got the weekend to get through and that may be my downfall, but I’m going to try and get through tomorrow as best I can. We’ll see how it goes. And 2 weeks from now I might be doing a face plant into the middle of the nearest cake I can find, but for right now, it’s all good.

Oh, and I’m down 2.5 pounds from Monday.  Woohoo!

So yeah. No sugar is a good thing. Who knew?!

Update: It is now Saturday afternoon and I caved. There were cupcakes involved and I ate…some. Will report back with more of this riveting story on Monday.
