Weekend Recap, What the Heck Was I Thinking & A Produce Question

Happy Monday everyone! (I’m not really all that happy that it’s Monday, but I’m trying to be upbeat)Wow the weekend really flew by fast! We spent most of it at the ball field for the season opening tournament. I’m not sure how we ended up but we won 2 and lost 2, so I guess it could have been worse. My little guy (and by little, I mean he’s as tall as me) smashed a couple into the outfield and made a couple of really great catches – I am so proud of him!

Can I just say “What in the HELL was I thinking when I signed up for Tigerlilly‘s challenge?????????????????? I am so far behind – TL and Military Mom did over 40 miles last week. FORTY MILES. Me? Um well, I did *cough* ten. Yeah, ten, but like I told TL, usually I do maybe 4 or 5 miles in a week, so 10 miles is a step up for me. And this week I will step up even more, I’m shooting for 14 miles this week…we’ll see how it goes.

On a related note, whilst meandering the aisles of We Take All Your Money Wal-Mart, we (the fam) ended up near the scales, which oddly are right next to the fish tanks – what’s the logic behind that one? Anyway, the kids got out various scales and soon the hubs was weighing himself (is it wrong that I’m slightly happy that he has gained twenty pounds?) and all the kids were weighing themselves and peer pressure got the best of me and I hopped on a scale too. The hubs now knows what I weigh and that’s a Big Deal for me. The look on his face was disbelief, followed quickly by a look of “oh shit I hope she didn’t see that look on my face“. I just laughed and said, “THAT’S why I am doing Weight Watchers!!” I’m kind of relieved in a way to let him know, because now he will understand why I am eating yogurt for breakfast and busting my ass on the treadmill everyday.

On another related note, SELF has a calculator to help you discover what your Happy Weight is*. This weight is not what your vanity and ego think you should weigh, this takes into account your age, if you have had children, obesity in your family and other factors to determine what weight you could realistically be happy with.¬†Strangely, my happy weight is 134 and that falls right in line with the WW weight range for my height and age, and it’s the weight that I would ultimately like to be. But that means I’ve got 50 pounds to lose if I want to get there. And speaking of losing weight, I can tell already that I won’t have a loss tomorrow. I’ve been doing every thing mostly right, but I can feel that my body is hanging on to every ounce of water I have drunk in the last 7 days. But I know that the loss will happen eventually, so I’m not really worried.

Okay, here comes the Question I’m To Afraid To Ask Anyone Else, So I Will Ask You Guys: when *they* say you should wash your fruits and veggies before you eat them, do they mean rinse them under water, or actually use soap and water to wash them? I have never known the answer to this and I don’t want to appear stupid in real life, but I know you guys will love me no matter what, so I leave the answer to you: How do you wash your fruits and veggies? I would love to NOT get E Coli, so your help is greatly appreciated on this matter.

  1. First of all YAHOO!!! on your 10 miles. I am super proud of you for kicking butt … and for the fact that you are pushing yourself to do more this week!! Dont feel intimidated…this isn’t a race… this is to get you focused on what you can do when you push yourself to do it. Did I think I could get 42 miles in one week?…pfft… no! But it felt good to do it!!

    If you want help to stay motivated you should try to catch up to Susie (13 miles this week) or even pass her! I like competition so I am just trying to stay ahead of Military Mom!! LOL

    I remember the first time Hubby stood behind me when I stepped on the scale. He had the same H*&^ Sh&^ face on that your Hubby probably did. My response? “Hey! You try having 2 kids in 2 years and see how your body thanks you!” … Of course being pregnant wasn’t the reason I was 215 lbs… The weird thing is that I am only down 20 lbs but Hubby says I look like I’ve lost 50 lbs. I guess my body is building a whole lot of muscle in place of the fat! Anyway, he is more supportive now then ever… and he celebrates with me when I lose a pound or two!!

    As for washing fruits and veggies.. I usually use dish soap and water and just run a wet soapy dish cloth over them! They sell a special soap to wash them with… but its WAY too expensive!

  2. Jill, it’s awesome you did 10 miles last week. Regardless of whether you hit 40 miles or not, at least the challenge is making you move your body.

    I didn’t want DH to know how much I weighed either. Not for years and years. It’s stupid, he can obviously see my body and how yucky it was, but back then I didn’t want him to know I weighed more than he did. It sounds like you found some freedom in him knowing your weight now, so that’s a good thing.

    Vickie at babystepsV has a long post on washing fruits & veggies today. Did you see it? You can find her on my blog list. I am not nearly anal enough about washing stuff–I rinse strawberries and apples and raw veggies and anything else that I don’t peel, but other than that I don’t wash anything. Bagged lettuce I eat straight out of the bag (guess that’s pretty stupid, but I like to live with my head in the sand).

    I’m interested in that Self calculator. Off to do that next. Have a great week!

  3. That happy weight calculator is scary cool. It said I should weigh 140, which is intuitively what I think I can get to and be happy with. Yes, I’d love to weigh 125, which is the “100 pounds plus 5 pounds for every inch” old fashioned weight I should weigh at 5’5″, but there’s no way I could maintain that. But 140 is about 15 pounds from where I am now and about what I think I need to be. How cool that now I have a calculator that tells me it’s a good weight, too. Because I need outside reinforcement, you know. My intuitiveness just ain’t good enough. =)

  4. Scrub a potato with cold water and a veggie brush, peel a carrot, dip lettuce in cold water with woolite……jk I never heard of using soap on veggies. I hope I don’t die! Now I’m going to look up the self weight calculator.

    Congratulations on the 10 miles last week!

    We too, just started baseball (sounds like your son is on a select team?) so was very very busy on Saturday.

    I usually wash in water the veggies (especially apples and pears because of the wax) but haven’t been washing prewashed bagged lettuce (now I know they say to do it anyway). My parents were/are the type to leave food out (Thanksgiving Turkey sits out all day and into evening before being put away) so I know I have an iron stomach.

    My hubby has gained a few pounds since his shoulder surgery in late December, but I swear he did yard work last weekend and this past weekend and he already looks thinner . . . grrr!

  6. Hey, 10 miles is AWESOME!!!!! I am right there with you. I was pretty proud of my miles–because it’s a whole lot more than usual. It’s getting me moving…and that’s good.
    I just read the comments..apparently I need to step up my game b/c someone is coming up close behind me! Ok..bring it, Jill ..by way of TL. Shall we shoot for 14 miles this week? I did NOTHING Monday..and did 3 miles today..at the gym. Not sure when I will get there again..but I will get the walking in someway..Let me know how it’s going for you. My husband still doesn’t know my weight–even covered his eyes during every weigh in at the ob. during 2 pregnancies…Since he weighs closer to my goal weight than I do, I’ll keep it hush hush. I do like when he gains weight tho. I call him tons of fun..and all that fun stuff.
    Lastly, the fruits and veggies..just water here…but I am no expert. Do post any interesting tidbits.
    Lastly, good luck with baseball season. Sounds like you have a little superstar!
