A 40-something woman trying to lose 40-something pounds

Tag Archives: walking

Ho.Ly.Cow.

Boy are my shoulders sore today!!!  Not just my shoulders but my sides under my arms – what are those called? Anyway, OUCH!!  Who knew that a few push ups could cause such agony?  I think I’ll wait until tomorrow to continue the Push Up Challenge.

I did my two mile walk last night and it was awesome!  Don’t tell anyone, but a peek at the scale showed a solid 160 this morning.  Squee!!!  I weigh in on Thursday and I would love to see 159.5.

I forgot to bring my breakfast with me this morning and so for the first time since high school, I did not have breakfast. By the time lunch rolled around, I was starving!!  Did I inhale my turkey sandwich in one swift movement?  No, because I had the crappiest turkey sandwich EVER!  I don’t know why, but the turkey tasted…fake.  It was smoked turkey from the deli, and I guess I got the wrong kind because this was not turkey; this was a gag-inducing turkey-like substance.  I ate only half my sandwich and about 5 of my Kashi crackers.  So I’ll probably be starving again in an hour and nothing to munch on.  Did I mention the cupboards are practically bare at home?  Just call me Old Mother Hubbard…I hate grocery shopping.  Oh well, I’ve got lots of water and some gum with me today, so maybe that will hold me until I can get home to beef stew, which is stewing in the crock pot even as we speak, er, type.

On a completely random note, my left eye has been twitching for a week and it is driving me INSANE!!!!  Anyone got a remedy for this???  I’m ready to stick a pencil in my eye to make it stop.  Of course, I would prefer a less invasive remedy, so if you’ve got one, I’d love to hear it.

Guess that’s all I got today.  Oh wait, I was going to mention MizFit’s post today about doing a random act of kindness for someone today or tomorrow or whenever you can get around to doing it.  She’s on my blogroll to the right over there so go visit her and then do something extra nice for someone today, k?

See ya later, taters!!

About these ads

Monday August 11, 2008:  soon to be known as “The Day Jill Gets Her Shizz Together”.  I am starting TigerLilly’s walking challenge as well as the 100 Push Ups Challenge today, which is a good thing because apparently I have no upper body strength whatsoever.  I did 13 knee push ups, but then tried to do regular push ups – sad, very sad.  I could not do even ONE.  I’d like to think it’s because I tired my arms out with the knee style push ups, but I really think it’s just because I am a (insert Hanz &Franz voice here) weak little girly girl.

So on the work out front I have a two mile walk planned and 12 push ups to do.  If I’m feeling particularly pumped, I may throw in some ab work, I don’t know.  I think I’m more motivated to work out when I have a goal in mind than if I’m doing “just because I need to”, so these challenges have come along at the perfect time.

I wanted to start Phase 1 of South Beach today, but since I didn’t make it to the grocery store over the weekend, the only protein I have in my house is some turkey lunchmeat.  I’ll do my best though to work with what I’ve got.  Eating hasn’t been bad lately, but just not as great as I’d like.  I’ve been really lax about getting in fruits and veggies lately, so that needs to be a focus this week too.

Other than that, not a whole lot to say today.  Had a great weekend with my sister and her family, and the hubs and I decided to buy a new or new-to-me car very soon.  The Honda has a death rattle that can no longer be ignored.

Hope you all have a good productive healthy week!!

Layta!!

I finally got in a great walk last night.  Actually it was a 2/3 walk and 1/3 run, and it felt awesome!  I slept great last night and I feel so much better today.  I just need to remember this on the weekends, because that is when I tend to let other things get in the way of my workouts.

I wrote the above paragraph at 7:30 this morning and it is now 12:30.  I just couldn’t think of anything else to write.  But luckily there are plenty of other bloggers out there who have plenty to say:

Debby wrote a wonderful post about what inspires her.

Red over at Unstarved has another funny video blog post up – he and his sister do a new video every week and they are hilarious.

It’s summer time and Cranky Fitness has some alternatives to DEET for offing those pesky mosquitoes (I have 5 mosquito bites right now as we speak).

And if you are slave to the cubicle like I am (actually I have my own office), you might get some tips from The Office Diet.  This blog is great for dealing with those 9 to 5 dieting challenges (or in my case 7-3:30).

And Karly at First Ourselves is a great resource if you are struggling to find some balance in your life.  Her primary goal is trying to get women to feel good about themselves, and she has some great essays in her archives. Go check her out!

That’s about all I have time for right now, but you all have fun with these links!  Hopefully I’ll have something to actually blog about tomorrow!

I forgot to take the morning “pills”.  Guess what?   I did not eat my desk and everything in or on it.  Why is this significant?  Because it reassures me that I can function normally with out the aid of an appetite suppressant.  I’m still going to keep on taking them, at least for a little while longer.  :)

I have not walked on my treadmill since last Wednesday.  This is bad because I have come to depend on the good feeling I get from the endorphin rush when I walk.  I also really like the stress relieving affect walking has on me.  By Saturday, I could feel myself getting tense.  By Sunday, I was REALLy cranky and tired.  Today, I”m just down right pissed!   Come hell or high water, tonight I am walking dammit!!  I ♥ my treadmill!!

I saw this on failblog.org this morning:

Hey LauraN does this look familiar???  When I did LA Weightloss (several years ago) there was a mom & pop cafe right next door and you could smell all the down-home cooking wafting through the door.  It wasn’t easy to ignore!

Have a good day everyone!  :)

Well let’s see, what to blog about today?   For starters, I saw my doc yesterday for my weekly weigh in and I am down another pound and a half bringing me to 169.  Yeah baby!!  Buhbye 170’s!!  That’s 17 pounds down since the end of February…only 25 pounds to go.   I think the last time I weighed 169 was when I went back to work 18 months ago.  About 6 months after I started working, I tried Intuitive Eating and my weight shot up 15 pounds in a very short time.  It’s taken me a year to lose the weight that I gained in just a couple of months – major suck!!  But I’m on the way down again, and I know NOT to try that little experiment again.

Since my eating plan with the doc is a high protein plan, I have been checking out low carb websites and such.  I always thought South Beach was a knock off of Atkins, but actually they are very different.  In researching these websites, I find that (and if you are on Atkins, please don’t take offense to this) the Atkins-type groups are somewhat militant in their stance on carbs.  It kinda scares me a wee bit.  I have always heard good things about South Beach, and the SB sites I have found were very friendly so I decided to check the book out from the library just to see what all the hoopla is about.  I have found that SB is really not like Atkins very much at all.  The main similarity is the induction phase (the first 2 weeks), but after that, SB is all about good carbs and good fats, and finding balance in your meals.

**tangent**I realize I am waaaayyyyyy late to the low carb party.  I never did jump on the low carb bandwagon, but since I have been eating low carb lately, I understand how beneficial adding more protein to your diet can be.  I’m sure most of you already have tried low carb one way or another and none of what I am telling you is new to you.  But it is all new to me.

Anyway, if you have never read the book, I highly suggest it, if only for the excellent description of what sugar does to our bodies and how certain foods are digested.  I find it incredibly interesting and enlightening.  In the 3 weeks that I have been on my docs plan, I haven’t had any bread or tortillas, or chips, or anything else high in carbs, and quite honestly I haven’t missed any of it.  What I do miss is the convenience of these things.  It is so easy to throw a sandwich together in the morning to take for lunch, but now my quick lunch is chicken or tuna salad.  I am starting to get the hang of cooking lots of protein and getting very creative with fish, chicken, and veggies.  It’s getting easier to eat this way, and I feel good most days (the days I don’t feel great is due to not enough sleep the night before).  I will get to add in the healthier carbs eventually and I look forward to that day!!

My walking is AWESOME!!  I am getting faster and my highest speed is starting to feel slow, so I may bump it up some more.  I have even thought of adding a bit of an incline when I walk, just to challenge myself a little.   Also considering walking with some light hand weights to pump up the arms a bit.   All in all, things are going well on the exercise and eating front.  FINALLY!!

Chore update:  Monkeyboy is doing great with the chores!!  Yesterday he even came home from the sitter’s house across the street to bring the trash to the curb since it was Trash Day.  He did it without being reminded, which is HUGE! I of course, praised him appropriately and told him I was really proud of him.  He’s been doing really well lately, and even getting to his chore list before I have to remind him.  SuzyQ does okay, but I have to go through her list with her one by one and she usually does hers right before bed, but as long as she’s doing it, I don’t mind when she does it.   So far so good!!  I am sooo digging the Handipoints!!

Having the family over tomorrow to celebrate Father’s Day with my dad and my grandpa who will turn 93 in July.   93!!!!   That’s a helluva long time to live.  He’s still pretty sharp even if he can’t hear, and he is a funny guy.  It should be a good time.

Hope you all have a great weekend!!

Happy Monday everyone!!

I hope you all had a good relaxing weekend, I know I did.

Is it completely weird that my last post gave me the most comments I have ever had on my blog?  Who knew that bras and nipplage were such popular subjects?  Thanks for all the advice – I’m going shopping this weekend (God willing) and I am going to look for some *helpers* or at the very least new bras.

I finished Pasta Queen’s book Friday night, amid  shouts of joy of my family (yay! Mom’s not ignoring us anymore!!).  It’s a great read and I plan on reading it again.  I’d give you a full review, but I figure you can find reviews better than the one I would give (go check out Laura’s review), so I’ll just say – I liked it. A lot.  Good job PQ!!

Yesterday (after much lying around doing a whole lot of nothing), we went to a restaurant called The Hammett House – a place my MIL loves to go for every holiday. It’s a mom and pop place, but it thinks it is very fancy, which it really isn’t, but if you know anything about small town politics, you know that places like this they are better than any chain restaurant.  I have never been really crazy about this place – its food is overpriced and just so-so and the only time we go there is when MIL has something to celebrate (birthday, Mother’s Day, etc).  Yesterday, however, my opinion of The HH changed.  I had THE BEST SALAD EVER IN THE HISTORY OF SALADS.  Oh my word, people, you have never tasted such deliciousness in all you life.  The name was something like “Caramelized Salmon with Strawberries Salad”.  They had me at *caramelized*.  It was chunks of salmon that was caramelized (no, really?), with slivered almonds, red onion, strawberries, chilled bowtie pasta, on a bed of spinach leaves with raspberry vinaigrette dressing.  Ho.Ly. Cow!!!  I must learn to make this salad.  The bowtie pasta really didn’t add anything, but it was different, so I figure you could add it in or not and the salad would be just as good.  I don’t know how many calories were in this thing and I don’t care.  I’m salivating just thinking about it now!!  Yum!!

After all the deliciousness of Mother’s Weekend (cause you really can’t limit it to just one day), I knew I needed to walk this morning, only when my alarm went off, I didn’t get up.  For some odd reason, I just didn’t want to walk.  I had a couple of really good cardio pumping walks over the weekend (dare I say I ran a little? I actually ran a lot on Saturday), so I was looking forward to my walk this morning.  But this morning I just said “no”, and reset my alarm and didn’t get on the tm.  Now I feel like I forgot to brush my teeth or put deodorant on or something.  I just feel off.   I’ll probably try to walk this afternoon just so I can say I did it.  That’s a funny thing for a couch potato to say, don’t you think?

Okay Debby – you caught me. I have been purposely avoiding talking about TL’s challenge because frankly, I’m sucking at it. Am thinking of quitting because the suggested mileage per week is 42.Think about that for a moment…42miles PER WEEK. SEVEN DAYS to walk 42 miles.

That’s SIX miles per day. Every day. Every week. For many many weeks!! Wears me out just thinking about it.

I’m doing good to get in 10 miles a week (last week was 8). When I signed up for this, I knew I wouldn’t be able to do 2 hours of walking every day, but I thought, “this will be fun and it will get me motivated to work out every day, even though I’ll be a little behind everyone else.” Key word in that sentence is *little*. I’m not just a little behind, I’m waaaayyyyyy behind everyone now.

So maybe it would be better to bow out now, and just keep going at my own pace and do my own little challenge in my head. I don’t know.

I’m this close to dropping out.

In other news, there is this radio commercial running right now for a tanning salon. The woman doing the voice on the commercial sounds like a really bored, deep voiced Romanian woman and she’s talking about the freaking news. I think there may be some joke to this, but it’s over my head. Anyone have any idea what this may be about??? It’s completely annoying and I may never go to this particular salon just because of this commercial. Not that I go to tanning salons – my lily-white legs can attest to that, but if I were to go, I would not go to this particular branch of salons because I find their commercial to be a kin to fingernails on a chalkboard. I’m just sayin…

Weigh in yesterday was not bad, but not good either. I stayed the same this week. Still sitting at 179, but I’m really not surprised I didn’t have a loss. Too many *one bite of this*, and *just a taste or two of that* went on all week. So I’m going to try to be extra careful about tracking this week and getting all my water in. And oh yeah, more walking. I need to start taking some vitamins and supplements – what do you all take? I know I should be taking calcium, and a multivitamin, but what else do you all recommend?

Off to do more work – YAY WORK!!! ;)

Holy cow guys.  I did it.

I got up at 5 AM this morning and did 30 minutes on the treadmill before work.

Yeah, I can’t believe it either.

The working out in the afternoon thing just isn’t working out this week, so I decided that since I get up at 5:30 anyway, I can just as well get up at 5 and squeeze in a work out.  I think God blessed me with a great night’s sleep, which made it easier to get up and going this morning and I managed to eek out 1.5 miles by walking a lot and jogging a little.

I may even do it again tomorrow!

I don’t think I’ll have a loss at the scale today. You know how you can just *feel* your weight? I think I have been a little too loose with my points, you know, a bite here, a cookie there. It all adds up in the end (pun intended). One thing I love about WW is the fact each week starts fresh and new – clean slate!

I didn’t get my walk in yesterday because I was helping the hubs clean out the water garden in the flower bed. We worked for about an hour on it, but honestly, I didn’t really work that hard. I watched him do the hard work, while I was the cheerleader standing on the side lines (Good job Honey! It looks great!). So I am really kind of peeved at myself for not getting the walk done, but hopefully today I can walk before my weigh in tonight. I’m going to the 6pm meeting because baseball practice is at 5:30 and the hubs has a meeting with a client at that same time. So the plan is get home – walk for 45 minutes, drop the boy off at practice, go to WW, and then maybe come home and walk a little more. We’ll see. I have a feeling dinner is going to be of the grilled cheese variety tonight!

Maybe I need to break up my walks into 20 minute segments. If I do 3 segments a day, that will give me 3 miles a day. I’ll try that tonight and see how that works. Hmmm, that might be the solution to my walking woes.

On a totally unrelated note, I have this weird crick in my neck. It doesn’t hurt, but it makes me want to cock my head to one side. Strange.

Okay, break time is over, gotta get back to work!

PS. Does the font look particularly small today? My computer is being weird today and showing teeny tiny font. Just wondering if anyone else sees it too.

Happy Monday everyone! (I’m not really all that happy that it’s Monday, but I’m trying to be upbeat)Wow the weekend really flew by fast! We spent most of it at the ball field for the season opening tournament. I’m not sure how we ended up but we won 2 and lost 2, so I guess it could have been worse. My little guy (and by little, I mean he’s as tall as me) smashed a couple into the outfield and made a couple of really great catches – I am so proud of him!

Can I just say “What in the HELL was I thinking when I signed up for Tigerlilly‘s challenge?????????????????? I am so far behind – TL and Military Mom did over 40 miles last week. FORTY MILES. Me? Um well, I did *cough* ten. Yeah, ten, but like I told TL, usually I do maybe 4 or 5 miles in a week, so 10 miles is a step up for me. And this week I will step up even more, I’m shooting for 14 miles this week…we’ll see how it goes.

On a related note, whilst meandering the aisles of We Take All Your Money Wal-Mart, we (the fam) ended up near the scales, which oddly are right next to the fish tanks – what’s the logic behind that one? Anyway, the kids got out various scales and soon the hubs was weighing himself (is it wrong that I’m slightly happy that he has gained twenty pounds?) and all the kids were weighing themselves and peer pressure got the best of me and I hopped on a scale too. The hubs now knows what I weigh and that’s a Big Deal for me. The look on his face was disbelief, followed quickly by a look of “oh shit I hope she didn’t see that look on my face“. I just laughed and said, “THAT’S why I am doing Weight Watchers!!” I’m kind of relieved in a way to let him know, because now he will understand why I am eating yogurt for breakfast and busting my ass on the treadmill everyday.

On another related note, SELF has a calculator to help you discover what your Happy Weight is*. This weight is not what your vanity and ego think you should weigh, this takes into account your age, if you have had children, obesity in your family and other factors to determine what weight you could realistically be happy with. Strangely, my happy weight is 134 and that falls right in line with the WW weight range for my height and age, and it’s the weight that I would ultimately like to be. But that means I’ve got 50 pounds to lose if I want to get there. And speaking of losing weight, I can tell already that I won’t have a loss tomorrow. I’ve been doing every thing mostly right, but I can feel that my body is hanging on to every ounce of water I have drunk in the last 7 days. But I know that the loss will happen eventually, so I’m not really worried.

Okay, here comes the Question I’m To Afraid To Ask Anyone Else, So I Will Ask You Guys: when *they* say you should wash your fruits and veggies before you eat them, do they mean rinse them under water, or actually use soap and water to wash them? I have never known the answer to this and I don’t want to appear stupid in real life, but I know you guys will love me no matter what, so I leave the answer to you: How do you wash your fruits and veggies? I would love to NOT get E Coli, so your help is greatly appreciated on this matter.

Wow, I guess I shouldn’t go so long between posts huh? Just had lots to talk about today. =) Everybody have a great week!
